Setting up
How do I set it up in Safari?
- Press Safari at the top of this page and get the app from the App Store.
- Open the Digital Habits: Focus app once and press Open Safari Extensions Preferences… (or go to Safari › Settings › Extensions).
- Tick Digital Habits: Focus.
- Go to any website, click the Focus icon next to the address bar and choose Always Allow on Every Website. The other choices expire or cover only one site, and Focus stops working until you allow it again.
To use it in private windows too, tick Allow in Private Browsing under Safari › Settings › Extensions.
How do I set it up in Chrome, Edge, or Brave?
- Press Chrome or Edge at the top of this page (Brave uses Chrome's), then Add to Chrome or Get, and confirm Add extension.
- Pin it: click the extensions button (the puzzle piece) and the pin next to Digital Habits: Focus (in Edge, the eye).
- Check its site access: right-click the Focus icon, choose This can read and change site data, then On all sites. Otherwise it only works on a site after you click it.
To use it in private windows, right-click the icon, choose Manage extension, and switch on Allow in Incognito (Edge: Allow in InPrivate; Brave: Allow in Private).
How do I set it up in Firefox?
- Press Firefox at the top of this page, then Add to Firefox, and confirm Add.
- Pin it: click the extensions button (the puzzle piece), the gear next to Digital Habits: Focus, then Pin to Toolbar.
- If Firefox asks for permission to access your data on all websites, allow it: Focus has to see a page to hide parts of it. You can check this later under Manage Extension › Permissions.
To use it in private windows, choose Allow next to Run in Private Windows on the same page.
Using Focus
How do I hide something, and bring it back?
Go to the site and open Focus.
- On YouTube, Facebook, X, Instagram, LinkedIn, Reddit, Google, and WhatsApp, tick what you want gone.
- Anywhere else, press Pick… and click the part of the page to hide; it shows up under Your picks.
To bring it back, untick it, or press Remove next to it. If what you hid comes back when you reload, Auto-save changes to hidden elements is off in Settings ⚙: press Save as default, or switch auto-save back on.
What do Greyscale, Delay, and Redirect do?
They are the three cards at the top of Focus, and each applies only to the site you set it on.
- Greyscale drains the colour; click it again to turn it off.
- Delay shows a calm screen that counts down 5 to 600 seconds before the site appears, a moment to ask why you came. Click Delay, then Turn off, to stop it, and change its message under Settings ⚙ › Unlock / delay message.
- Redirect sends you elsewhere whenever you open the site, even from links: another site, like wikipedia.org, or a page on the same site, like /feed/subscriptions on YouTube.
How do I remove a redirect?
- If it sends you to another website, you cannot open Focus on the site you redirected, because it sends you away. Go to the website it sends you to and open Focus there: under Redirects to, each rule is listed, like youtube.com → wikipedia.org. Press × next to it.
- If it sends you to a page on the same site, open Focus on that site, click Redirect, then Turn off.
How can I lock in my settings on websites?
Click the lock at the top of Focus, then Lock in. On that site, what you hid stays hidden, and Greyscale, Delay, and Redirect stay on. To unlock, click the lock again and wait out a countdown: 10 seconds, unless you change Unlock wait (seconds) under Settings ⚙ › Accountability before locking.
Does it work with Digital Habits: Blocker?
Yes. Blocker uses this extension to block websites in Chrome, Edge, Brave, and Firefox on Windows, and in Firefox on Mac, so keep it installed there.
Privacy & help
What does it collect?
No personal data, and your settings stay in your browser. At most once a day, it sends an anonymous count so we know roughly how many people use Focus: the browser's name and an ID that changes every month, never the sites you visit or your settings. Switch it off under Settings ⚙ › Send anonymous usage count. Firefox sends nothing.
It isn't hiding anything. What's wrong?
Usually one of these:
- Site access is limited: right-click the icon, choose This can read and change site data, then On all sites (Firefox: allow access to all websites under Manage Extension › Permissions).
- You are in a private window it is not allowed in (see setting up).
- It was just installed: reload the page, or close the browser fully and open it again.
- The site changed its layout, which can break a ready-made option until we update it: hide it with Pick… for now, and write to us below.
How do I remove it?
Right-click its icon in your browser and choose Remove (in Firefox, Remove Extension). For Safari, move the Digital Habits: Focus app to the Bin. Your settings go with it.
